Celebrating Peter Smith: 18 years of dedication to silage

After more than 18 years with Volac, Peter Smith is stepping into retirement, bringing to a close an extraordinary chapter that began in 2007.

From the outset, Peter became closely associated with Ecosyl, playing a vital role in connecting scientific research with real-world farming practice. Working from home but maintaining strong ties with Volac’s Port Talbot R&D team, he became an essential contributor to the company’s silage research programme. It was not unusual for Peter to arrive with a car boot full of silage samples, collected directly from farms, to support preservation trials and ongoing research. His practical, hands-on approach ensured that Volac’s science was always rooted firmly in the realities of the farm.

Over the years, Peter became a familiar and trusted face of Ecosyl to farmers and customers around the world. Through practical demonstrations, training sessions and countless on-farm conversations, he helped farmers understand the science behind producing better silage. One of Peter’s greatest strengths has always been his ability to translate complex technical knowledge into clear, practical advice that farmers can apply with confidence.

Throughout his career at Volac, Peter has been a passionate advocate for both Ecosyl and Ecocool. He has served as a trusted voice for customers and a valued mentor for colleagues and sales teams working across Volac’s feed partners. Whether standing beside a clamp explaining silage preservation, contributing technical expertise to marketing initiatives, or acting as a vital link between farmers and the Port Talbot R&D team, Peter’s influence has been felt across the entire business.

Those who have worked with Peter will know him for his calm and thoughtful nature, his deep well of practical knowledge, and the quiet yet meaningful way he supports the people around him. Over nearly two decades, he has built lasting relationships throughout the agricultural industry and leaves behind a legacy that will continue to benefit farmers, colleagues and partners alike.

While Peter is stepping away from his full-time role as Technical Business Manager, his connection with Volac will continue. After a well-earned break, he will return later in the year in a consultancy role, allowing the business and its partners to continue benefiting from his experience and expertise.

Peter’s dedication, integrity and willingness to share his knowledge have made a lasting impact over the past 18 years. As he begins this new chapter, we thank him for his outstanding contribution and wish him a very happy and well-deserved retirement.
